OK: it's discussed everywhere: but what does everyone think he is?

Well he is not an Istari as all 5 are other people. He is too powerful to be a Maiar and is not a Valar because they are all in Valinor. Tom B. claims to have been in ME before the 'Dark Lord came from Outside' and therefore appears to have been in Ea before the Valar despite the fact earth was said to be lifeless- see this thread on the Plaza for info: - www.lotrplaza.com/forum/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=21&TopicID=72232im aldibibable ther btw) So it could be suggested his is the embodiment of the Secret Fire in ME since he is so powerful and was supposedly there before the Valar (or at least Melkor). The Secret Fire was put into the Earth before the Valar and so he could be the embodiment. Because if he is only a repressentation of the Secret Fire then he is not alive and therefore could have been there before the Valar and the Earth still be called lifeless. Just my thoughts on this.

Or he could be a "protector" of the Earth, a being who was there to protect the earth and life. For doubtless he was something known of and understood by few if any on Earth: so therefore Gandalf probably did not know either. So I personally think that he has power beyond reckoning: that he could, if needed, be powerful beyond all that has been thought of him. For what has he done so far in the history of the world: simply kept peace in his own land. And remember the last battle: my thoughts are that he is to be the chief in that: maybe a great power who defeats all and wins the battle for the forces of good.
